School Night
Here is the first big Chinmaya night
Students perform with all their might
Drama dancing all is there
Singing also takes its share
Sit back and eat a big bun
While enjoying all the fun
When the actors get confused
And we do not get amused
When we stand and stare with fright
Ma’am do guide us with your light.
(After many years we had a school night (Chinmaya sayanam), where I recited this poem)

Congratulations Ma’am
On the day for the treasure
You went to receive the prize
You held it with pleasure
Without minding the size
You showed it to all
With the greatest joy
Proud of you are all
Every girl and boy
Whistling are the trees
Singing is the dam
Humming are the small bees
Congratulations Ma’am
For my dearest, Ms. Maya Mohan, Principal, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Cochin, on winning National Teacher’s Award 2006.

TEACHERS DAY WISHES
There may be songs that say- “We don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought control and all things like that”- and honestly we enjoy them too. The truth is- we cannot do without teachers! What a bore life would be, without schools and trends and the most important people in our lives, our teachers. Who is a teacher? What are we children looking for?
“I am not a teacher, but an awakener.” Said Robert Frost.
Here’s what we want. A teacher holds several roles. A teacher must love all of her children and treat them as not equal, but special individuals, thus she is a mother. The teacher must ask thought provoking questions and encourage exploration and investigation, thus she is a scientist.
The teacher must sing loud and proud, even if she cannot carry a tune, here she is musician. The teacher must run, hop, jump, skip, and tumble with the children, thus she is a gymnast. The teacher must share accounts of far away lands and imaginary people, thus she is a storyteller.
The teacher must bandage scraped knees, thus she is a nurse. The teacher must give encouragement, louder and stronger than anyone thought possible, thus she is a cheerleader. The teacher must listen with open ears and an empathetic heart, thus she is a friend.
The teacher does not entertain, dictate, police, referee, lecture, demolish, or judge. The teacher is facilitator, enabler, questioner, encourager, organizer, nurturer, advocator, and supporter.
Our teachers play several roles, each different in action, but equal in importance. To teach is to touch a life forever. Teaching is a work of the heart and teaching is the only profession that creates all others.
Dear friends, many can teach but we are lucky that we have the special few who can reach.
Dear teachers,
As teachers you have a special place,
In our heart.
Because in this game of life,
You’ve helped us get our start.
We just want to thank you,
For all the things you’ve done.
You’re very special teachers,
And to us you’re number one!
